Early in the morning on Thursday, 1st July 2021, the Department of State Services (DSS) operatives raided the residence of Sunday Igboho, following an intelligence lead from a discreet source about Igboho and his cohorts possessing and accumulating arms.

Sunday Igboho, 48, originally named Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo is an Oyo-based car dealer known to deal with exotic cars which he sells to popular figures including politicians. He was nick-named Igboho after his hometown in Oyo state after he took it upon himself to defend the defenseless.

Igboho became a notorious for taking advantage of the Independence Day celebration on 1st October 2020 to demand the secession of the Yoruba tribe to form an independent Yoruba republic. Further, after several killings, which were alleged to have been perpetrated by the Fulani herdsmen grazing in the South-West region of the country, he openly demanded that they all return to their homelands. Following his declaration, there have been allegations that he has been oppressing the herdsmen in the South-West, forcing them out of the lands.

However, his activities have gotten on the wrong side of the Nigerian government, as it sees them as an incitement of violence and ethnic tension among the citizens of the country.

While it appeared like the government paid no attention to his activities, the government had apparently been on his trail, as its DSS operatives recently got intelligence that he is stockpiling arms and ammunition. Following this lead, the operatives raided Igboho’s Soka residence in the early hours of Thursday, 1st July 2021. Reports have it that the operatives were seriously engaged in a gun battle by nine (9) men, who possessed AKs and Pump-Action rifles.

After the operatives had overpowered the gunmen, arms, ammunitions, voodoo charms, walkie-talkies, laptops, binoculars, amidst other weapons were recovered from the residence. Also, both international and local driver’s licenses bearing Igboho’s name on them with a German residence permit were recovered. While 12 of his men were arrested, Sunday Igboho escaped after the heated gun battle.

Briefing the press, the DSS declared Sunday Igboho wanted. In their brief, they stated that the events that ensued during the raid, and the items seized, are confirmations that Igboho and his gang have a plan to create mayhem in the country. Hence, they are on his trail to apprehend him. They also stated that they have alerted foreign authorities of Igboho’s status, so he does not seek to leave the country. However, this DSS attack on Sunday Igboho has sparked up reactions from Professor Akintoye, Gani Adams and Aisha Yesufu.

While he has been adviced to turn himself in, Igboho's spokeman, Olayomi Koiki came out to say Igboho is safe and was not arrested. Speaking to BBC pidgin, Igboho announced that the Lagos mega rally which is billed for Saturday, 3rd July 2021 has been cancelled, following the tension from the raid. The mega rally was meant to be a sequel to the Ekiti rally organized by Professor Banji Akintoye. However, Igboho and his supporters appear to remain resolute on their cause.
