On 1st January 2020, inhabitants of Ikot Obuk village in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria stood still following august visit of two dangerous pythons to the family of James Edet. The mother of three children was away to buy chicken to celebrate the first day of the year. Their father had left to order two jars of palm wine from his friend. No one could reason that the lives of their four children could be in danger on that fateful day when new year celebration was on the zenith. The two pythons made their way through back door of the house into the room where the children were playing while waiting for their parents to return. While one of the snakes crawled around the room leaving the children in a circle, the second one climbed the wall to the ceiling fan and hung itself head down. There was no help from neighbors even as the children were screaming and crying in fear. The python hanging on the ceiling fan was staring at each of the children one after the other. It wasn't long when the one 'walking' around the room suddenly coiled itself around the youngest of the children. I was made to understand that the boy had been imbecile from birth. All effort to treat him proved abortive. He was seen as a problem child to the parents. He was stubborn and destructive, but there was nothing the family could do than to pray for miracle. The snake folded itself around him for over 15 minutes but didn't do him any harm. Other children had no option than to shout harder seeing their brother covered by a python of over 7 feet long. As the mother opened the door, she could not bear the fear of her children being trapped by pythons, but ran out to call her neighbors. No person could withstand the sight and size of the serpents. The men and youths in the village did all they could to rescue the children but to no avail. I was shocked to my marrow. Fear couldn't let me raise a stone. In our very presence, the snake uncoiled the boy. Two of them left through the door to near-by bush. Everyone watched them in awe. What on earth could two pythons do with children on the first day of January? Why did the boy not harm?
