How to COME UP with a PROMENADE THEME

Promenades are one of the most awaited activities in school. It is the time to escape the hectic performance task schedules. A time to think only of flaunting your dress and looking your best. Others call this vanity but I call this necessity especially for adolescents juggling with self-worth. Indulging ourselves once in a while is not a crime. Feeling good about ourselves pushes us to accomplish things aligned with our passion. Well, without self-worth, passion would be a difficult commodity to come by. It is during promenades that students learn to apply restraint and propriety. This part requires the strong foundations built by the school which may eventually cement the culture of promenades in the Philippines. This also leadS us to discuss Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs; particularly, love and belongingness, and esteem. However, love and belongingness here should not be focused on intimacy rather friendship, social belongingness and responsibility. The promenade in a teenager’s life is one of the crucial peaks that need to be satiated and in the same manner when well-established will lead them to self-actualization.

I have to disagree with the notion that promenades are the cause of early teen pregnancies. Maybe in the past but promenades now should have evolved. One cannot remove it from the teenagers to feel giddy about their partners (not date). That is all but normal. I say evolved because I believe that promenades should not be about getting a date. I should be something more; something worthwhile…something substantial.

Allow me to share to you how I get ideas for promenade themes.

Storyline: GET INSPIRATION FROM WHAT YOU READ OR WATCH

This is a very good foundation for a storyline. Well, it’s either you get inspiration from one film or you could collaborate two or more. You could also have a fusion of both from what stories or books you’ve read and the films you watch. In my case, it’s the TV Series. Yes, I’m that much of a couch potato. For example, I proposed a Faerie Ball theme which I took inspiration from the TV series “Shadow Hunters” and of Edmund Spensers the Faerie Queene. So basically what I am saying is ANCHOR YOUR THEMES FROM LITERATURE; essentially films are literary pieces. A promenade without a storyline is just a plain program.

Attire: SCOUR PINTEREST FOR POSSIBLE OUTFITS

Pinterest is a very good platform to help you create and organize boards; thus categorizing your needs. Once you type in the outfits you have in mind you create a board to make sure all the possible dresses that fit your theme that came out from your search are saved in your board. For the theme Faerie Ball I typed in floral dresses, floral suits, and fairy ball outfits. You would be surprised to what you can learn in Pinterest. Once the theme is presented to the parents and some possible outfits are already presented, you could simply give them the link to see the rest of the samples. Boy, there is no need to print. You have become an instant earth warrior by saving paper.

Dances: GET HELP FROM YOUTUBE

It’s a promenade so it requires dancing. Well, I already mentioned where you get your themes; might as well get the possible music for the dances there if there are. For the Faerie Ball theme, I searched the scene where I heard the “prom-worthy” music from, then downloaded them. So for the theme I got the music from the TV series “Shadow Hunters” and “The Originals”, and from song covers that fit the theme and the storyline. Yes, the dances have a storyline connecting one dance to the other. You might want to search dances in YouTube as well.

Guidelines: BLOG TO DISCUSS THE THEME, THE DO’S AND DONT’S

It is very important that the guidelines for the promenade are properly set because if not, it would just be one empty party. In my case, I have a blog, so I put the guidelines together with the sample attires and the link where to get the rest of the sample outfits. Actually it is not the link to Pinterest that I give to the parents. It is the link to my blog where they can read again the guidelines before they would click the link to my Pinterest account. Once the prom fever is over, I simply hide the page.

Awards: RANSACK GOOGLE

Know the right words to ask. That’s a tip I could give. Remember that you have anchored your theme now on literature thus the awards must also be from literature. Since the theme we are talking about is the Faerie Ball, I scoured Google about the fairies, fairyland and all that relates to it. For instance, I have come up with an award which refers to the head turners: Fae Enchanter and Fae Enchantress. Coining the awards is entirely up to your creativity and cunning.

Organizers: CONNIVE WITH EQUALLY PASSIONATE AND EFFICIENT FRIENDS

Indeed! No great plan can ever be done alone. You see my role now? I am the “theme guy” (I’m not a guy though). This requires the cooperation of all teachers involved from the practices to all the necessary preparations to make the event successful and worthwhile. I mentioned friends not co-workers because in a workplace where you deal with learners, we should stop being workers. We should make relationships and ties in order to succeed in any endeavor. Collaborating with friends makes the job easier.
