Do not chase after fool's gold, it's a waste of time. Instead dig deep and tirelessly for true gold. University education is a choice and not a compulsory yardstick to success. In Nigeria, university degrees seem to be the most sought after ticket to a good life. No company would employ without a degree. Every year, millions of students enter universities nationwide to get a degree. You have to get a degree to get a job to get money to get a life. It's a never ending cycle and the words that I often hear from people but as I prepare to enter the labour market, I am beginning to see that everything is not as it seems Youths are pressured, and even forced to enter the university to get degrees to get a job, but why go to a 4-7 year school to learn and earn a degree when you can use the money to learn a trade, invest and employ. Universities are not meant to teach you how to grow yourself. They were built to teach students how to grow a company which is further enslaving more graduates to a limited mindset of working for others to survive not helping themselves to thrive. I now understand the wise words of some elders, university is not a must and it is not for everyone. Most successful people do not have a degree, they focused and built on a skill to become the best in that area. I am not saying University is bad but why rush for fool's gold that no matter how much you polish it, it is not recognised as true gold by everyone and your descendants will not be able to use it or sell it? What is the use of getting a degree in medicine if you will not be able to get a job for over 3 years because hospitals are full and don't need a doctor. What is the use of getting a law degree if you will end up being told to become an entrepreneur, a farmer or Baker that will never use that degree? If it was going to be like that, why didn't we just start from there instead of going to university? Students get depressed trying to read and pass exams, they are embarrassed and trade sex for marks to pass. It has gotten to an extent that university degrees are even bought now decreasing the value of a degree. Surely, it's a wild chase for fool's gold in Nigeria. Because even if it shines and is worth something, it will never reach the status of real gold.
