Did you love science back in high school? Do you think you learnt everything you needed to learn in science? Well, I bet you will be surprised to know that there are amazing facts that you never knew about science.
We have compiled a list of wild science facts that you probably never learnt in high school.
1. Water can boil and freeze at the same time
One of the most amazing scientific facts that you probably never learnt in high school is that water can freeze and boil at the same time. It sounds crazy but very true! In science, it is called ‘triple point’ when the pressure and temperature are right for solid, liquid, and gas to coexist.
2. An egg resembles a jellyfish underwater
If you crack an egg and put it on land, it will probably be a big mess. However, it is interesting that the same egg put underwater (60ft below the sea), the pressure inside the egg holds it together. It looks like a jellyfish when you observe it underwater.
3. Pythagoras’ theorem can be proved with fluid
You were probably taught how to prove the theorem of Pythagoras using a simple mathematical formula. However, it is possible to replicate this formula using fluids to prove that indeed the theory is right.
4. Lasers can be trapped in a waterfall
Do you know how the flow of light is guided by fiber optics cables? Well, this is what scientists refer to as total internal reflection, which also allows lasers to be trapped in waterfalls.
5. You can actually see without your glasses
Did you know that you don’t need your glasses to see? Well, this sounds impossible but science says it is possible. Using your hand, you can make a pinhole that will help you focus the light into your retina. It might not give you the 20/20 vision but gives you a good way to see if your glasses are far.
6. Solar flare releases energy equivalent to millions of 100-megaton atomic bombs
It is interesting to know that a single solar flare has the capability to release energy that can be equated to millions of 100-megaton atomic bombs. The beauty of it all is that it happens all the time.
7. Physics allows cats to land on their feet
Physics is responsible for allowing cats to land on their feet, making it nearly impossible for them to land on their backs.
8. You have a higher chance of surviving a grenade attack on land than underwater
It is easy to think that you have a higher chance to survive a grenade attack underwater than on land. However, the reverse is actually true. An explosion of a grenade underwater is worse than on land.
9. A ball flies if you spin it when dropping it
Did you know that a ball would fly if you spin it when dropping it? Well, it really flies. The Magnus effect is responsible for making the ball flies.
These are some of the cool science facts that you were probably never taught in high school. You might want to experiment a few to see how cool they are.
